| Pinchbeck Victorian Vinaigrette |
This remarkable vinaigrette is from the early Victorian period and is made from pinchbeck. It is beautifully crafted and has it's original bale. Set centrally to the piece is a micro-mosaic depicting a floral design (a small piece of black missing). The mosaic measures 9mm by 7mm. Inside, the vinaigrette has a plain grill, which looks to be 9ct gold plated, that lifts to allow the sponge to sit inside. The grill has had some lead repair work done internally. The pendant measures 3.5cm from the top of the loop to the base and is 2.2cm wide. It is 1.2cm deep. Pinchbeck is a form of brass invented in the 18th Century to create imitations of expensive jewels and used in place of it's gold counterparts when there was a risk of theft. |
