A gorgeous bracelet from the Victorian period, specifically attributed to a period known as the British Raj, when Britain directly ruled the Indian subcontinent from 1858 until 1947. This is likely c1890 and is made from braided elephant hair. Elephant hair would fall out of their tails and was collected to create jewellery as a souvenir.
This particular bracelet is a wonderful example with a 15ct gold clasp at the top and a gorgeous 15ct gold elephant charm hanging from its own gold section. The charm does move a little around the bracelet and if maneuvered carefully, it could likely go to a different position on the braid. I have tested this only a little as I like it where it is. The elephant has lovely detail in the gold and has a hollow construction.
The clasp is secure and clips into place.
Details:
Materials - 15ct Gold (marked), Elephant Hair
Age - Victorian
Size - The bracelet measures approx 5.8cm across and is around 6mm wide. It is pictured on a 6” wrist and fits well. It would fit a medium wrist too.
Condition - Very good. The tongue of the clasp has been repaired with lead at some point, though it does not appear to affect the mechanism.
Weight - TBC
