A lovely useful pendant from the Art Deco period, with Egyptian hallmarks believed to date it to 1923-4 (a Y). Egyptian items were very fashionable during this period, following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The pendant is shaped as a sarcophagus, which is slightly flatter in style than the usual variations as, unusually, it is a penknife. I see this design more often as a pencil and a penknife seems more tricky to find.
The sarcophagus has a soft matte gold appearance as the silver was likely originally gilded, and there are lovely enamel details throughout. The knife rests in place well and is fairly stiff to open, though is in good working order overall.
The chain pictured is for display only.
Details:
Materials - Silver, likely 800/900 (Egyptian marks), Enamel
Age - Dated 1923-4
Size - The penknife measures 70mm when extended. It is around 42mm long by 13mm wide when closed. All measurements exclude the bail.
Condition - Very good. A little wear to the enamel here and there, commensurate with age. Some scratches to the blade on the underside of the knife, noted for accuracy only.
Weight - 9g
