An unusual and secretive scent bottle from the late Georgian/Regency period, c1830s. The scent bottle is made from solid 15ct gold and has a little glass locket to the front. There is a sun pattern around the oval glass with a little tonal difference in the golds. The sun is ever so slightly yellower than the overall gold of the scent bottle highlighting a striking design. The bottle is framed all around the outside with circles of gold with reeded detail all linked into each other. This design is rigid to the outer edge. The bottle is finished with a hinged cap and a small belcher chain leading up from each side to a central decorated large bail. The back is set with a white agate.
Amazingly, the locket front can be removed to place your own little momento inside where there is a fair sized recess within. This is currently filled with old cardboard and paper that I have left in place. Removing the locket should be done with care with a dress pin, though the reeded frame does slide out with relative ease revealing the hidden compartment inside. There is a little purposeful split in the reeded frame to allow the gold front to slip in and out carefully. It stays securely in place when placed back. Such care and attention to detail!
The chain pictured is for display only.
