Late Georgian Locket Signet Ring

£995.00

A stunning signet ring with a lovely weighty feel. The ring has an inscription inside the band with the date 14th June 1833 (as well as a name that has worn over time), dating it to the very end of the Georgian period. It is made from solid 18ct gold and has a pretty shield design top. The shield has a slightly stepped top and is engraved with an emblem; a raised fist holding onto a star. The raised fist is often associated with unity and strength and the addition of a star could symbolise hope and guidance too.

To the back of the centre is a gold frame - a locket back. The locket can be removed and your own photo or momento could be placed inside. The locket is missing its original glass, though it has an original bone or MOP backing, which may have backed a previous picture. This curves in line with the curve of the ring. This would sit in place against the frame to protect whatever was inside; a secret compartment!

Such a lovely signet and rare to find one of such quality with a locket back.

Details:

Materials - 18ct Gold (tested, marks worn)

Age - Dated 1833

Size - The shield measures approx 12.2mm by 10mm.

Ring Size - UK K ¼ US 5 ½ This ring could be resized a little, though it has already been sized previously, which has affected the hallmarks.

Condition - Very good. As mentioned above, locket glass missing. Evidence of a previous resize, noted by missing hallmarks, rather than an obvious join. Very slight difference in gold colour between the stepped emblem and the main ring; it is not clear why this is and it is extremely minimal.

Weight - 8.2g
