A striking pendant from the end of the Victorian period, from the Austro Hungarian Empire. The pendant is made from silver and is enamelled in green and white stripes to the front and the back to imitate the bird feathers, with orange and white as the body. The pendant is designed as a phoenix diving down. Spiritually, a phoenix is a signal of rebirth. When it is soaring down, it is said to represent a grounding before the moment of rebirth.
This phoenix has a deep blue sapphire at the centre, which exhibits some colour zoning within. There are rows of natural rubies set into the tail and wings and the pendant is complete with a little pearl spacer chain and the original enamel bail at the top. Such a colourful and expressive pendant.
