sold out

A stunning locket from the middle of the Victorian period with an engraved date to the back of 14th January 1864. The locket is made from 15ct gold and has the most beautiful snake coiled around the top. The setting holds a stunning bullseye agate with a very deep brown/almost black appearance and a circle of white around the border. The snake’s head rests on the top of the agate and the body coils around the side.

To the back, there is a glass fronted compartment, which can be taken out to place your own photo inside. As the locket back has a lip, it is fairly easy to do this yourself.

Snakes were popular in the Victorian period as a sign of everlasting love, following Prince Albert proposing with a snake ring to Queen Victoria. The use of black in jewellery was also commonplace, particularly during this period, as the Queen mourned the death of her husband from 1861 onwards.

The chains pictured are for display only.
