A lovely and unusual ring from the mid Victorian period. The ring is made from 9ct gold and is fairly rudimentary in form. The centrepiece is a piece of banded onyx, which has been carved into an urn surrounded by a ring of wheat. It is a memorial ring and the wheat could represent the joy and abundance that has passed. The shank has the word ‘Memory’ engraved into it in strong block letters with a cross to one end.
There is a date letter within the band, though there is no city emblem to distinguish exactly which date. It is likely Birmingham 1866 as the cartouche shape would match this. It is also faintly engraved inside the shank with ‘Froggie Nov 7th’
Details:
Materials - 9ct Gold (tested), Sardonyx
Age - Likely dated 1866
Size - The centrepiece measures approx 13mm by 11mm.
Ring Size - UK N US 6 ¾ This ring cannot be resized due to the lettering.
Condition - Good. The carving is in lovely condition. The shank shows the join, please see the pictures. This is likely to be original as it sits correctly within the lettering. The whole ring is a little ‘rough around the edges’ in its make, though this exhibits a certain charm.
Weight - 2.7g
