Victorian Elephant Hair Ring
A pretty ring from the Victorian period, specifically the Raj era, c1890s. The ring is made from strands of elephant hair that have been separated with a central gold rope twist design between the two strands. It is held together at the top with a little gold bar, which can be worn to the top or the bottom of the finger depending on your preference.
Elephant hair would fall out of the tails of elephants and be collected to be made into items of jewellery as souvenirs from India. The beauty of these rings is that, although they are rigid, there is some elasticity to the band due to nature of the hair. It makes them very comfortable on the finger.
