A lovely charm pendant from the late Victorian period. The pendant is made from solid 15ct gold and houses a reverse carved crystal intaglio, which has been intricately painted in beautiful detail. These intaglios are often called Essex Crystals after William Essex who was a famed enamel miniaturist. Somewhere along the way, in the mid Victorian period, his name became synonymous with these beautiful pieces of art, though the technique was refined much earlier by Thomas Cook.
This particular example is of a horse’s head with a slightly forlorn expression. The colours are wonderfully vibrant and it is backed by mother-of-pearl in a closed back setting, as is often the case. It is a good size and looks very pretty on a chain.
