A wonderful and unusual necklace from the Victorian period. The necklace is made from silver and niello with rose gold overlay details through the centre. Niello is a black compound of sulphur with silver, lead or copper to create a black alloy that contrasts beautifully with silver. It was particularly popular during the late Victorian period.
This particular necklace has a lovely flat link, which overlaps creating a beautiful, fluid design that continues the full length. It is very unusual and I have not seen a design such as this in a niello chain. The necklace is finished with a striped niello dog clip and bolt ring, which are both in excellent working order.
