Victorian Spiky Surprise Dog Clip
A wonderful contraption from the late Victorian period. This a dog clip clasp with an ‘anti-theft’ device built in. These dog clips would have had a pocket watch attached and this particular example has a special mechanism; when you pull down on the dog clip, spikes come out of the top. This would have spiked the fingers of the thief when he pulled on a watch to steal it and given them a spiky surprise! Such a great design. It is marked with the word PAT for patent and dated Feb 8 1887. It is made from 9ct rolled gold and is a super fun interpretation of these classic clasps.
