A wonderful telescopic ‘pencil’ from the late Victorian period, made by Walter Thornhill. The pencil is made from solid 9ct gold and when closed resembles a plumb weight or spinning top. The pencil extends by pulling on the bottom and is a gorgeous shape overall with a good weight to it. It has a kitemark on the inside, which dates it to 1873. The only other example I have found is in silver; the material more commonly used by this maker. It looks wonderful on a chain, short or long, and is an interesting talking point!
The chains pictured are for display only.
Details:
Materials - 9ct Gold (tested)
Age - Dated 1873
Size - The pendant measures 52.5mm when extended. It is around 24mm when closed and approx 18mm wide at the top.
Condition - Good. The actual pencil mechanism is missing from the bottom. This is worn purely as a decorative piece. Otherwise, minimal wear commensurate with age. A little flat ding in one area.
Weight - 16.1g
